The scenic drive from the historic logging town of McNary to the idyllic alpine village of Greer, Arizona, is a breathtaking 25-mile journey through the heart of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests and the White Mountain Apache Reservation. Following State Route 260 East before turning south onto the winding State Route 373, travelers are treated to a dramatic elevation climb, topping out near 8,500 feet.

Flora and Fauna

The lower elevations feature sweeping grasslands and high-country meadows that transition rapidly into thick ponderosa forests and dense, mountain-hugging aspen groves. The wide grasslands are excellent for spotting pronghorn antelope, red-tailed hawks, and northern harriers, while the higher elevations are prime elk and black bear territory.

This rich ecosystem is a haven for diverse wildlife. Drivers frequently spot massive Rocky Mountain elk and mule deer grazing in the meadows, especially at dawn and dusk. The area is also home to black bears, Abert’s squirrels with their distinctive tufted ears, wild turkeys, and the elusive Mexican grey wolf.
