Flora and Fauna

The lower elevations feature sweeping grasslands and high-country meadows that transition rapidly into thick ponderosa forests and dense, mountain-hugging aspen groves. The wide grasslands are excellent for spotting pronghorn antelope, red-tailed hawks, and northern harriers, while the higher elevations are prime elk and black bear territory.

Notable Sites and Landmarks

Greens Peak Fire Lookout: Located at the end of a steep, rugged 4×4 side spur (FR 61), this active fire tower sits at 10,134 feet and serves up unparalleled, 360-degree views of the entire White Mountain range, including Mount Baldy to the south.

Volcanic Formations: The main route winds directly between the towering geological landmarks of Whiting Knoll and St. Peters Dome.
